The hormone dihydrotestosterone, which is formed from the male sex hormone testosterone under the influence of a specific enzyme, plays a key role in the development of androgenetic hair loss. It leads to the hair in very specific places, e.g. over the forehead, on the temples or in the crown area, become thinner and thinner and eventually fall out.

Fortunately, dihydrotestosterone cannot exert its undesirable effect on all hair follicles: the hair on the back of the head is resistant to the hormone. This also explains why hair that is removed from the back of the head and transplanted onto bald areas only rarely falls out later.
